Good morning peeps. I just whipped up a pretty delicious breakfast smoothy, so I thought I’d share. Consider this a mini-post 😉
I’m going to give you a little breakdown of what these yummy ingredients do for you!
Grapefruit – Known, for as long as I can remember, as the “weight loss” fruit. It is packed with vitamins A & E (great antioxidants), potassium and some minerals, and has a low glycemic index. Simply put, it won’t spike your blood sugar levels. The lycopene found in grapefruit is thought to decrease your risk of certain cancers. Limonoids found in grapefruit are also thought to protect against certain cancers. (1) *If you’re on medications please make sure it does not interact with grapefruit, since many do.
Banana – The poor banana has gotten a bad rap as of late, mostly because it of it’s relatively high calories and sugar content. But to me, this is still a great choice, especially in the morning. It’s loaded with B6, vitamin C, potassium, manganese, magnesium, and some fiber too! If you want to get real in-depth on exactly why bananas are in fact good for you, check out this site. Cilantro – Love this little herb. Love the flavor. Love that it’s a chelator. That’s right, it actually pulls heavy metals from the body. It of course brings along some anti-oxidants of it’s own. So toss it in wherever you can.
Pineapple core – Ok I know this sounds weird. It did to me at first when I saw a friend post about it on Facebook. But it really does blend up nicely in any high power blender. And it has a high concentration of bromelian. This substance is a natural anti-inflammatory. If you don’t think your inflamed, hop on our Thursday night Healthy Living meetings. But for now, let’s just say the root cause of a lot of our diseases are from inflammation. So you do need it!
Matcha Tea – Matcha tea is a Japanese ceremonial tea made by grinding the green tea leaves into a powder form. I originally made this purchase to try to calm my hyperactive child. (Did not work) However, it does help me focus and it’s loaded with anti-oxidants. Because you’re ingesting the entire tea leaf instead of just steeping it, it’s equivalent to about 10 cups of green tea. When you throw this in a smoothy, you can’t even taste it.
Side note: Do NOT mix with milk or diary products. The casein in dairy prevents your body from taking up all the good stuff! The base of my smoothies is always water or almond milk. And my protein powder is vegan, so it’s not an issue for me.
Ginger root – I’m obsessed with ginger, as I’m sure you’ve noticed if you pay attention to my recipes. I love the flavor! But it’s a wonderful anti-inflammatory and has a ton of antioxidants. Ginger is thought to calm an upset stomach, protect the heart, and even help with PMS cramps. So ginger up ladies! (Or slip it in her food men).
Pure Nourish Protein – Love my protein powder, and yes I’m bias because I sell it. However, why do you think I sell it? Because it’s the only one I’ll use! No diary, no soy, no sugar, no artificial sugar, no GMOs. It contains not only 15 g of awesome vegan protein, but also pre and probiotics. (I’m literally obsessed with gut bacteria). It doesn’t get much better than that!
And there you have it. The grapefruit will leave your skin glowing, and the matcha tea will perk you right up. Now go show the world who’s boss 🙂
