The scariest thing about Halloween is what it does to my waistline. Seriously! All the candy. All the treats at Halloween parties. All of the yummy, spooky themed alcoholic beverages. And then my jerk co-workers always bring in the extra candy laying around their own house for us to eat. It’ll look better on your ass than mine, leave it home!
I feel like Halloween is the pre-game to Thanksgiving, which is really just prepping you for Christmas. What a terrible trap we fall into for the last quarter of the year. No wonder we all need resolutions to lose weight after.
Well not this year. I’m determined to have a fabulous, spooky, and SKINNY Halloween. I have searched the web and my favorite blogs to bring you healthy-ERRRR Halloween treats. Notice I did not say healthy. These are not “healthy”. They are healthier alternatives that must still be kept in moderation. They are, however, a vast improvement.
Dirt & Worms
Get the creepy party started with this Paleo version of dirt and worms, posted by Vanessa at Clean Eating with a Dirty Mind. I knew I would love her blog just from the title. And I was right, she’s fabulous! Dirt & Worms Recipe
I have not tried this recipe but it looks amazing. And I think Cassy from Fed & Fit (who is the author of the post) is a food genius.
She makes gummy worms out of REAL fruit, maple syrup, and gelatin! What a vast improvement from the store bought crap our kids love so much!

What to give the tricker-treaters
Want something healthy, but cooler than a toothbrush to hand out for tricker-treaters? Check out these UNREAL candies that I found at Every Day Healthy
If you google UNREAL candies and go to their site, you can see all of the products and ingredients. Yes, it’s still candy. But it’s non-GMO, contains organic ingredients, and fair trade. Ahhh, be still my heart!
Not your grannies candied apple
No more caramel apples. Try this out instead. Cut apples. Sprinkle with cinnamon. Drizzle with honey. Crush walnuts and sprinkle them on there too. Boom! I just made that up. It’s really good and takes 2 minutes. You’re welcome.
Life without Witches Brew 🙁
I am obsessed with Witches Brew each and every fall. I don’t know if you all drink this across the country. Here in Michigan we love our locally crafted wine called Witches Brew. You serve it warm and the heat and spicy are the perfect snuggly fall drink.
But alcohol is the devil when you’re trying to lose weight. Instead of witches brew try out a mulled juice. The following recipe sounds delicious! To really make it healthy, juice your own apples and cranberries. Mulled Juice Recipe
What to do with the trick or treat candy
STAY OUT OF IT! It’s not yours you thieve. You just stole from a 6 year old that marched up and down the cold streets for hours in pursuit of a pillowcase full of candy. And now you’re going to sneak into it after they go to bed? How could you!
Did that work? Do you feel too guilty to sneak into your kids candy bag? No? Ok, well, I tried. That’s all I’ve got. You’re on your own for that one. My kids don’t trick or treat anymore. Good luck!
