Juicing is all the rage these days. Some people like to incorporate juicing into their diet routine. Others like to take a more drastic approach and do a juice cleanse. This is said to allow the body a time of detoxing by resting the GI track. I have been unable to find research to back this up. Just because I couldn’t find it, doesn’t mean it’s not out there. Even if there hasn’t been any studies on the matter, it does not mean it doesn’t work. It just means that nobody with enough money to fund a research study has chosen to do so.
I’m certainly no expert on the matter. But I have decided to give juicing a serious try. Here’s why I think it’s right for me. Maybe some of you could benefit as well.
My palate has definitely grown more fond of fresh veggies. But I’m honestly not huge on raw foods yet. There’s more veggies I’m willing to consume in juice than actually eat raw. This means I’m getting way more nutrients! A head of cabbage, a bunch of tomatoes, a beet, some carrots and some kelp. Sounds terrible right? Throw it through the juicer and BAAM, it’s awesome! Ok, awesome isn’t the right word. But I can definitely drink it so yay for me!
Just juice veggies
I will be juicing predominantly veggies. Fruit juices are not good for you. You take out all of the fabulous fiber and leave the sugar. This is one reason I haven’t jumped on the juicing band wagon. Most of the people I know are juicing a ton of fruit, throwing in a little kale, and calling it a health drink. After hearing Dr. Ginger talk about juicing just veggies, and reading her book The Rainbow Juice Cleanse, I’m sold! This makes good nutritional sense to me.
Store bought is junk
Most juices purchased in the store, even vegetable juices, have added crap. All kinds of sugar and preservatives. And they are all pasteurized. The juice is not raw. This means that the water-soluble vitamins are destroyed, as well as many of the enzymes from the juice. Plus, the fresher the product, the more nutrients it contains. It doesn’t get fresher than homemade!
So that’s why I’m juicing, and…..
Welcome to our life Betty. (My son Landon and I have decided to name our juicer Betty.) Betty is an Omega 8006 juicer and so far I’m in love with her. First of all, she’s a slow juicer. They are supposed to produce higher quality juices. They also include more of the fiber…..I love fiber!
Not only does Betty make some kick a** juice, she can also make nut butters, nut milks, and grind flour. (Yes, when I have time I love to grind my own wheat berries and whip up some old school bread). Now I don’t need to purchase a separate small appliance for all of these things!
And she comes with a 10 year warranty! Looks like a lot of parts, but it was actually easy to put together and cleaning is super easy as well.
Will I do a juice cleanse? Undecided. My will power isn’t that fabulous. I don’t believe in deprivation for weight loss. Nor do I feel there is enough solid research to support consuming juice alone for any extended period of time. But, I do love the fun anecdotal benefits that a cleanse may provide. So doing a cleanse for a few days may be in my future. But for now, I’ll be experimenting in the kitchen!
So far I’ve turned this………………….
And it was so darn good! I give juicing 2 thumbs up 🙂
